Overseas health workers exempt from immigration health surcharge

Following years of campaigning for overseas healthcare workers, the immigration surcharge is finally being waived.


The unfair fee, which sees all overseas nursing staff who come to the UK from a non-EEA countries pay £400 a year for the NHS.


The campaign was headed by the RCN, recognising that the unfair fee undermined the dedicated work that overseas nurses put into the UK healthcare industry. It was also recognised that the fee could have a detrimental impact on nurses from non-EEA countries coming into the the UK to work, increasing staff shortages across the healthcare industry.

The current pandemic (COVID-19) has served to reaffirm the importance of our internationally educated staff. As without them our national patient care would be at a higher risk.
